Once autumn arrives and that chill sets in across Kitchener-Waterloo, most drivers know it’s time to swap out their summer tires for a set more fit for Ontario’s winter roads. But what happens to your summer tires after the switch? Proper storage is key to getting the most life and value out of your tires. At Sullivan Automotive, we want to help you protect your investment and keep your vehicle safe year after year.
Why Proper Summer Tire Storage Matters
Tires are a big investment, and storing them incorrectly can lead to premature wear, flat spots, and even cracking in the sidewalls or tread. Whether you’re a first-time car owner or you’ve been behind the wheel for decades, taking good care of your summer tires during the off-season means they’ll be ready to go when spring returns to Kitchener-Waterloo.
Simple Steps for Storing Your Summer Tires
Here’s our Sullivan Automotive-approved guide to keep your tires in top shape until next season:
1. Clean Your Tires First
Before taking your summer tires off the car, give them a good clean. Use a mild soap and water to remove road salt, dirt, and brake dust. Let them dry completely to prevent moisture from getting trapped, which can cause rot or rust on rims.
2. Inspect for Damage
This is the perfect time to check for any issues. Look for:
- Uneven wear
- Cracks or bulges
- Objects lodged in the tread
If you notice any concerns, let us know—we’re happy to inspect your tires and recommend repairs or replacements if needed.
3. Store in a Cool, Dry, Dark Place
Tires are sensitive to sunlight, heat, and moisture. Find a spot in your garage, basement, or shed that stays dry and doesn’t get direct sunlight. Avoid places near furnaces or electric motors, as ozone can degrade rubber.
4. Keep Tires Off the Ground
If possible, store tires on a clean piece of wood, tire rack, or shelf to prevent flat spots and keep them away from cold concrete floors.
5. Store Them Stacked, Upright, or Hung
- Without wheels: Store tires upright.
- With wheels/rims: Stack them flat or hang them on hooks if space allows.
Rotate the tires every month or so to prevent pressure points.
6. Use Tire Bags or Covers
Plastic tire bags or dedicated covers help keep out dust and moisture. Just make sure the bags are dry before sealing them up.
